This book is crisp. It was a delight to read for my discrete mathematics class. It's explanations went right into the material. There wasn't any unneeded information to distract you. It was gentle with it's presentation and it's non-intimidation encouraged me to explore further than the class required. The practice problems were very useful and there was never any ambiguity nor confusion about how the author got to the answer. Thanks to this book, it was easy to receive an A. If you are a professor or instructor who wants your students to succeed, make this useful book a requirement.
I ordered this book to supplement my textbook, which is Kenneth Rosen's Discrete Mathematics 6th Edition. While the Schaum's book is filled with information, only about 15% of it was relevant to my class. The two books seem to emphasize different aspects of Discrete Mathematics. I also ordered Schaum's 2000 Solved Problems for Discrete Mathematics and ran into the same problem. So in a nut shell, I am disappointed with my purchase. This book may be great for you if you aren't using Rosen's textbook. We used this in conjunction to our lessons in Discrete Math at my University.
The problems are helpful (That is where the professor assigned homework from) but the text and teaching of this book is rather rambling and incomplete with a few typos here and there. I don't recommend this book as a standalone text to learn discrete math. Rather, it was a good refresher because it was concise but my lecture notes were more helpful for the most part. The 2nd edition of this outline is available for free online as a PDF. As far as editions are concerned, this and the 2nd edition seem to be the same but I purchased a used copy of the 3rd edition anyways and didn't so much as touch it all quarter. A Discrete Mathematics outline in the Schaum's fashion & style is certainly useful and sure one of its main advantages is pushing the reader towards further reading; just like other Schaum's titles, this one offers a good start and a big picture. Typos are never to be considered a mortal sin, yet I think it's unacceptable to find some in theorems' statements, thus yielding false theorems.
As long as typos appear in PROVEN theorems, a watchful reader can sure spot them, but what about UN-proven theorems, whose statements are meant to be 'just accepted'? This is a math book! I strongly urge Mc Graw-Hill to publish an updated errata page for this book (and for any other title containing such awful mistakes). Bottom line: reader beware! Keep an eye on a different resource while checking this out, exspecially when it comes to statements. Thought it is a good book on discrete with caveats.

It covers many topics in discrete mathematics well, however as far as proofs are concerned does not have a whole lot, and discreet does deal a lot with proofs and is a very important part of this subject, in my opinion. So if it is exhaustive proof coverage I would not recommend this book, and if I based my review on this I would dock it at least 1 - 2 points. Its explanations are understandable as it is written fairly well. Has many good problems in it and I think it does a good job. I have not read the whole book through so this is only half of the story, but it seems very good. Would suggest you pre-prep for your discreet class with this book at least a few weeks in advance as this will help you immensly as the subject can be difficult at times. Also get a good proof text to handle that portion & you are all set to become a discreet wiz.
Came on time & in good shape. If you are reading this review, then chances are you are taking or preparing to take a Discrete Mathematics course. I feel your pain. There's no way around it, Discrete Mathematics is tough stuff.
There is hope though. This reference book can be a huge life saver.
Now don't get the wrong idea. It will not solve all your problems or give you the test answers, but it will provide additional examples to problems that make your head spin and hopefully help the light bulb to come on.I passed Discrete Mathematics with an A and I have no doubt this book helped. Did you get stuck with a textbook (like Richard Johnsonbaugh's Discrete Mathematics - Fourth Edition) for your university Computer Science/ Discrete Mathematics course that just doesn't explain the concepts you're trying to learn? I definitely encourage you to purchase this book.
However, along with this book you should also buy '2000 Solved Problems in Discrete Mathematics' in Schaum's Solved Problems Series. While the book I'm reviewing here has some problems and solutions, this additional book provides many variations of these problems, allowing you to look at problems from the different angles that will probably show up on your next exam.
